Why should I upgrade my electrical panel in an older home?

If you’ve purchased an older home, depending on its age, you may be dealing with a 100 amp service panel or the even more outdated fuse box.  With today’s modern devices and appliances requiring more power, the existing service panel may not be sufficient to bear that load. Working with any outdated, damaged or ineffective electrical equipment increases the electrocution and fire hazard risk.

A service panel upgrade may be in order if you’re planning to add to your home, whether it’s additional rooms, an in-law suite or any other expansion type renovation.  If you have modern appliances in your home and there are frequent electrical problems with an old fuse box or low amperage panel, this may warrant an upgrade. You’ll need to contact your licensed electrician who should perform the work strictly to code set by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) in Ontario.  When you encounter one too many electrical issues, your professional electrical contractor will take a look at the existing panel, perform some diagnostic tests, and advise whether it warrants a repair or a complete replacement or upgrade.

What are the benefits of upgrading an electrical panel?

The main benefit is that if you’re already experiencing frequent tripped breakers, flickering lights and other signs of an overloaded system, then an upgrade to a 200 amp service should almost completely eliminate these issues.  Power will also be reliably and consistently delivered throughout the home.

How much will it cost to upgrade an electrical panel?

In Ontario, the average cost to upgrade to 200 amp service is roughly $3,000 to $4,000.

And the cost to replace fuse box with breaker panel?

A fuse box itself isn’t inherently dangerous.  In fact, it was a precursor to the modern circuit breaker and served the same purpose of preventing the wires from being overloaded.  The main difference is that it uses fuses to protect the wires from creating a fire hazard, but once the fuse burns out, it’s done. It has to be replaced.  So if you find your fuse box constantly overloaded, it may be time to replace it with an updated breaker panel that can handle your household’s power demands.

The cost to replace the fuse box will also run in the thousands, roughly $3,000 to $4,000.

Give us a call to get a no-obligation estimate on cost and time required for completion of the task.  Our licensed electricians in Sarnia are equipped to troubleshoot a range of electrical issues and will get to the root of the problem.  We treat your electrical problems as if they were our own, and will advise you on the best course of action after carefully assessing your fuse box or electrical panel.
